Wendy Davis (d) is currently a little over an hour into her filibuster to end SB5, the Texas bill that will close all but 5 of the clinics that perform abortion services and bans all abortions after the 20 week mark. This will mean families living outside of the 5 major areas that will have clinics will have to travel hundreds of miles in the hopes of getting abortion services. These clinics also provide other medical services these families rely on such as mammograms and Pap smears.
The proponents of this bill say it will improve safety standards for abortion clinics but NO medical association within Texas supports this bill and claim that instead, unsafe abortions and deaths from child birth will rise significantly.
Wendy Davis is a modern day hero in a legislature filled with folks who don’t care about their constituents and she fights in a system that considers her less than a human and not to be taken seriously. She comes from a poor, humble background and is a single mother working as a Texas senator. I have a lot of disdain for our faux democracy but Wendy is a small spark that there are good people who are not going to give up being the voice of the people who chose her, and NOT the voice of those who can buy her.
If the filibuster is successful, SB5 will die on the senate floor tonight here in Austin, Tx. Fingers crossed it does.
